Firm Services Involving Japan, Conducted by M. C. Williams
We have no office in Japan. But when Clients in the Denver, Colorado region need services relating to Japanese business disputes or international matters involving Japan or requiring Japanese language assistance, they turn to Williams Law, P.C. We have assisted both companies and individuals with Japan-related matters as diverse as international will & testament disputes, restaurant investment litigation and robotic manufacturing disputes.
A Cowboy Who Speaks Japanese?
Mr. Williams learned Japanese on the job during his 7 year odyssey building, operating and selling his Tokyo based import-export business. Starting from a drawer in college and ending with steel, chemical, hardware and consumer goods trading in six Pacific countries, Mr. Williams traveled to and developed contacts throughout Japan and in many industries, including banking, law, manufacturing, wholesaling and retail. He is ready and able to assist with business law needs on either side of the Pacific. Just call.
In Japan, Special Rules Apply. Use Them and Succeed.
Those dealing with legal problems relating to Japan realize very quickly that special unwritten rules govern much of the dispute resolution process in Asia. Nowhere is this more evident than in Tokyo, where cultural, legal and business norms can render even simple business issues exasperating and make redress apparently futile. Call Williams Law. We have been there, done that, and got the tee shirt, so to say.
Mr. Williams conducted his Japan-side trading operations from Tokyo, where he maintained offices in Azabudai near the Russian Embassy, and later in Kudanshita, near the old Yasukuni Shrine, not far from the Maguro Kaikan. "A Japanese business dispute," explains Mr. Williams, "achieves resolution through modern variants of ancient bushido, the warrior code, not greatly different from the cowboy ethos of my great-grandfather's Wyoming. It is ritualistic, opaque, intricate and sometimes ruthless. Once you know what you're doing, however, the process becomes very smooth, even graceful."
"When it comes to handling a business issue in Japan, much depends on the locale and industry in question. What works in Hokkaido sometimes fails in Okinawa. What succeeds in the electronics district of Akihabara, can fail miserably in the Wagyu farms of Matsuzaka. Small companies can be handled differently than large organizations. Entanglements with organized crime can be particularly thorny. Shareholder meetings can be more akin to Kabuki than a business presentation. Often, little can be accomplished in meetings, but anything can be solved after dinner walking among the snack bars of the entertainment district. An attorney dealing with a serious dispute in Japan must use timing, strategy and cultural knowhow, in addition to the relevant legal doctrines, in order to obtain the maximum result for the Client." --M. C. Williams
